Data Lens
The Chicago Park District issues swim advisories at beaches along Chicago's Lake Michigan lakefront based on predicted E. coli levels. This dataset shows the predictions and whether a swim advisory was issued due to the predicted E. coli level being at least 235 Colony Forming Units (CFU) per 100 ml of water.
The data used to make the predictions can be found in https://data.cityofchicago.org/d/qmqz-2xku and https://data.cityofchicago.org/d/k7hf-8y75. The measured E. coli levels determined later can be found in https://data.cityofchicago.org/d/2ivx-z93u.

This dataset contains information about vehicles (or units as they are identified in crash reports) involved in a traffic crash. This dataset should be used in conjunction with the traffic Crash and People dataset available in the portal. “Vehicle” information includes motor vehicle and non-motor vehicle modes of transportation, such as bicycles and pedestrians. Each mode of transportation involved in a crash is a “unit” and get one entry here. Each vehicle, each pedestrian, each motorcyclist, and each bicyclist is considered an independent unit that can have a trajectory separate from the other units. However, people inside a vehicle including the driver do not have a trajectory separate from the vehicle in which they are travelling and hence only the vehicle they are travelling in get any entry here. This type of identification of “units” is needed to determine how each movement affected the crash. Data for occupants who do not make up an independent unit, typically drivers and passengers, are available in the People table. Many of the fields are coded to denote the type and location of damage on the vehicle. Vehicle information can be linked back to Crash data using the “CRASH_RECORD_ID” field. Since this dataset is a combination of vehicles, pedestrians, and pedal cyclists not all columns are applicable to each record. Look at the Unit Type field to determine what additional data may be available for that record.
The Chicago Police Department reports crashes on IL Traffic Crash Reporting form SR1050. The crash data published on the Chicago data portal mostly follows the data elements in SR1050 form. The current version of the SR1050 instructions manual with detailed information on each data elements is available here.

Public alerts for the Chicago Department of Public Health's (CDPH) Health Alert Network (HAN).
The HAN provides CDPH with the capacity for quick, efficient, reliable, and secure web-based communication with CDPH staff, providers of medical care, laboratories, first responders and other local public health agencies and partners. The HAN facilitates CDPH’s day-to-day activities, including outbreak detection, investigation, and emergency response.
This dataset is published as a convenience to complement the HAN site, itself. While alerts generally are published promptly, for uses involving risk to health and/or life, please contact the HAN team directly to discuss other methods of receiving alerts.
The contents of this dataset, the HAN site, and CDPH's Web site are not intended to be substitutes for professional medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. Always seek the advice of your physician or other qualified health provider with any questions you may have regarding a medical condition. Professional medical advice should not be ignored because of something you have read on this data portal or any CDPH site.

This dataset contains environmental holds placed by the Department of Environment (DOE) up to December 31, 2011 and by the Department of Public Health (CDPH) post December 31, 2011 on construction-related permits issued by the City of Chicago. On January 1, 2012, the DOE was disbanded and all its inspection, permitting, and enforcement authorities were transferred to the CDPH. This dataset also contains No Further Remediation Letters (NFRs) received by the DOE or the CDPH for properties that have been cleaned up under the Illinois Environmental Protections Agency’s (IEPA) Leaking Underground Storage Tank (LUST) program. Throrium holds in this dataset ends November 15, 2016.
Data fields requiring description are detailed below.
APPLICATION ID: Unique identifier of record.
MAPPED LOCATION: Contains latitude/longitude coordinates of the site as determined through the Chicago Open Data Portal’s geocoding engine. In instances where the facility address is a range, the lower number (the value in the “Street Number From” column) is used for geocoding. For example, for the range address 1000-1005 S Wabash Ave, the Mapped Location would be the coordinates for 1000 S Wabash Ave.
TYPE: Specifies the type of permit hold placed on a property or the hold released on an individual permit. HIGHWAY AUTHORITY AGREEMENT is a permit hold placed on construction projects in the public right-of-way at certain locations in the City of Chicago. Refer to http://tinyurl.com/bn3grwt for more information. A THORIUM PERMIT HOLD is a permit hold placed on select properties in the Streeterville area for thorium contamination. Refer to http://tinyurl.com/d6wth39 . A THORIUM PERMIT HOLD RELEASE indicates that an applicant has complied with the necessary requirements and the Thorium Permit Hold has been lifted on the permit application. An NFR LUST is not a permit hold but the property may have certain land use restrictions or requirements (i.e. institutional or engineering controls) to prevent or minimize exposure of contaminants that may still be present at the property.
DATE: Date the record was entered into the database.
COMMENT: Comments relating to the hold or release.
DATA SOURCE: The city department that placed or released the hold.

Contracts and modifications awarded by the City of Chicago since 1993. This data is currently maintained in the City’s Financial Management and Purchasing System (FMPS), which is used throughout the City for contract management and payment.
Legacy System Records: Purchase Order/Contract Numbers that begin with alpha characters identify records imported from legacy systems. Records with a null value in the Contract Type field were imported from legacy systems.
"Comptroller-Other" Contract Type: Some records where the Contract Type is "COMPTROLLER-OTHER" are ordinance-based agreements and may have start dates earlier than 1993.
Depends Upon Requirements Contracts: If the contract Award Amount is $0, the contract is not cancelled, and the contract is a blanket contract, then the contract award total Depends Upon Requirements. A Depends Upon Requirements contract is an indefinite quantities contract in which the City places orders as needed and the vendor is not guaranteed any particular contract award amount.

NOTE, 6/23/2021: New columns have been added to this dataset and some existing columns will no longer be updated. The dataset has also been renamed. See the text below and http://dev.cityofchicago.org/open%20data/data%20portal/2021/06/23/covid-ed-visits-change.html for specifics. -- This is the place to look for important information about how to use this dataset, so please expand this box and read on!
This is the source data for some of the metrics available at https://www.chicago.gov/city/en/sites/covid-19/home/reopening-chicago.html#reopeningmetrics.
For all datasets related to COVID-19, see https://data.cityofchicago.org/browse?limitTo=datasets&sortBy=alpha&tags=covid-19.
The National Syndromic Surveillance Program (NSSP), a collaboration among CDC, federal partners, local and state health departments, and academic and private sector partners, is used to capture information during an Emergency Department (ED) visit. ED data can include information that are collected before cases are diagnosed or laboratory results are confirmed, providing an early warning system for infections, like COVID-19.
This dataset includes reports of COVID-19-Like illness (CLI) and COVID-19 diagnosed during an ED visit. CLI is defined as fever and cough or shortness of breath or difficulty breathing with or without the presence of a coronavirus diagnosis code. Visits meeting the CLI definition that also have mention of flu or influenza are excluded.
This dataset also includes ED visits among persons who have been diagnosed or laboratory confirmed to have COVID-19. During the initial months of the COVID-19 pandemic COVID-19 diagnoses counts are artificially low, due to varying eligibility requirements and availability of testing.
Over the course of the COVID-19 pandemic, public health best practices migrated from focusing on CLI to focusing on diagnosed cases. This dataset originally contained only CLI columns. In June 2021, the diagnosis columns were added, back filled to the start of the pandemic but with the caveat noted above. Roughly simultaneously, updating of the CLI columns was discontinued, although previously existing data were kept. Reflecting the new columns, the name of the dataset was changed from “COVID-Like Illness (CLI) Emergency Department Visits” to “COVID-Like Illness (CLI) and COVID-19 Diagnosis Emergency Department Visits” at the same time.

On May 16, 2011, Mayor Emanuel enacted Executive Order 2011-1. It requires Shakman-exempt employees of Executive Departments, department heads, non-clerical employees of the Mayor's Office, and persons appointed by the Mayor to City boards, commissions, authorities or agencies on or after May 16, 2011, to sign an Ethics Pledge http://bit.ly/mSkLU1. On July 28, 2011, this requirement was enacted into law by the City Council, as Section 2-156-015 of the Governmental Ethics Ordinance (effective September 8, 2011) http://bit.ly/qYti7P. The law requires new hires or appointees to sign the pledge within 14 days of starting their employment or appointments. The pledge obligates signers to abide by a ban on lobbying activity for two years after their City service ends. The Board of Ethics maintains these signed pledges. As a convenience, we are pleased to attach a list of persons who have signed this pledge. This list is sortable by name and department.

Due to requirements for lobbyists to re-register, the importance of showing year for most lobbying-related data, and some employers being reported by multiple lobbyists, the same employer often will have multiple records.

The City of Chicago launched the Micro-Market Recovery Program (MMRP), a coordinated effort among the City, not-for-profit intermediaries, and non-profit and for-profit capital sources to improve conditions, strengthen property values, and create environments supportive of private investment in targeted markets throughout the city. The goal of MMRP is to improve conditions, strengthen property values, and create environments supportive of private investment in targeted areas by strategically deploying public and private capital and other tools and resources in well-defined micro-markets. This address dataset contains additional geographies, such as Fire and Police Districts, Census Tract and TIF Zones, that can be linked to MMRP Permit, Case and Violation data using the ADDRKEY or ADDRGRPKEY.
